Zelensky on Putin: He is my enemy, but if I spoke to him, I would ask him why he is fighting us

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that, if given the opportunity to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he would ask why he initiated the war in Ukraine and would raise the issue of occupied territories. However, he emphasized that Putin is his enemy and he does not personally desire such a conversation, but believes it is important to happen to avoid a third world war. Zelensky estimated that Russia has stopped increasing the number of its soldiers, as mobilizations and contracts have balanced out with losses. Based on this assessment, he believes that 2026 could be a year for ending the war, provided Russia does not proceed with a new mobilization. However, Zelensky's statement coincided with Putin's announcement of conscripting 261,000 recruits in 2026, indicating that Russia has not abandoned its military mobilization.
