Yılmaz Insists: Sovereign Equality is a Prerequisite for a Solution

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz reiterated his view that sovereign equality for Turkish Cypriots and the lifting of restrictions imposed on them are preconditions for a resolution to the Cyprus issue. He argued that without these conditions, a solution is impossible, characterizing the Greek Cypriot side as the sole owner of the island and expressing concern over Cyprus' military agreements with third countries. He defended Turkey's role as a guarantor power, claiming that its presence has ensured stability on the island. He also announced the upcoming signing of a new financial cooperation protocol worth approximately 25 billion Turkish liras for infrastructure, health, education, and energy projects. The 'prime minister’ of the occupied territories, Ünal Üstel, emphasized the strong ties with Turkey, describing them as 'vital' and 'brotherly'. He criticized Cyprus’ military agreements with countries such as France and Israel, and blamed Greece and Britain for historical and contemporary tensions in the region, presenting Turkey as a pillar of peace. Mr. Üstel reiterated that the issue of sovereignty remains non-negotiable for the Turkish Cypriot side and that there will be no retreat from the demand for sovereign equality. He expressed hope for the completion of new digital and energy projects in the occupied territories. These statements demonstrate Turkey's and the Turkish Cypriot side’s consistent position on the Cyprus issue, focusing on the concepts of sovereign equality and guarantees, as well as criticizing Cyprus’ military agreements and the role of other countries in the region.
