WTO: Reforms Needed - 'Status Quo is Not an Option'

The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, warned that the organization urgently needs reform, emphasizing that the status quo is unsustainable. Speaking at a press conference, she stated that failure to reform would lead to “chaos” in the global trading system, as the world is evolving rapidly, with technology, such as artificial intelligence, changing the landscape. The need for reform intensified after the paralysis of the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism in 2019, due to the blocking of judge appointments by the United States. Okonjo-Iweala stressed that the WTO offers stability and predictability, but must adapt to new challenges to remain relevant and effective.
