Works related to Aykut continue – Concern over case management

The President and MP of the Citizens' Movement – Cooperation of Ecologists, Stavros Papadouris, expressed concern about the continuation of construction projects linked to Simon Aykut, despite developments in his case. He stated this after the closed meeting of the Parliamentary Refugee Committee, pointing out that the projects continue despite recent arrests and penalties. Mr Papadouris recalled that the Ecologists' Movement had contacts with the Minister of Justice and other Ministers on the issue, while emphasizing that the state has done significant work on the case, collecting evidence and imposing sanctions. However, he fears that the outcome of the case will be a “light sentence” while the seizure of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories will continue. A request from Israel to transfer Aykut is also causing concern, as there is uncertainty about the terms of his sentence in Israel and the possibility of leniency. Mr Papadouris stressed that if the case ends with a mild penalty while the seizure continues, it will undermine the efforts of the Ecologists' Movement to recover information and elements. The President of the Ecologists' Movement expressed reservations about the management of the case by the government, and is waiting to see how events unfold in the coming days, stressing the importance of justice and the protection of Greek Cypriot property in the occupied territories.
