Workers Stage Strike at Larnaca Airport Over Job Cuts

Workers at Goldair Handling Cyprus at Larnaca Airport staged a two-hour strike protesting the dismissal of dozens of their colleagues. Unions complain that the company terminated contracts with 44 of the 47 airlines it cooperated with, leading to a surplus of 117 employees. They also protest the non-payment of shift allowances to dismissed workers and the offer of downgraded working conditions by other ground handling companies, despite the government's commitment to maintain working conditions in the event of a transfer to another provider. Unions accuse the employer of violating the law and failing to pay wages and compensation, describing the situation as a result of the deregulation policy of airports. They demand immediate payment of debts, stable employment with decent conditions and an end to staff exploitation.
