“Withdrawal of Complaint Strengthens Request for Immunity Waiver” – Assistant Attorney General Says Regarding Nikos Sykas

The process for lifting the parliamentary immunity of DISY MP Nikos Sykas concluded today at the Supreme Court, following a complaint against him for assaulting his partner, which has now been withdrawn. Mr. Sykas did not object to the lifting of immunity, while his lawyer clarified that this consent does not predetermine the final outcome. The Assistant Attorney General emphasized that the withdrawal of the complaint by the victim does not diminish, but strengthens the request for immunity waiver, given the obligation to protect victims, and that this request serves the public interest. The Court gave the lawyer of Mr. Sykas a deadline to submit a written memorandum, while the process was rescheduled for January 15th. The MP stated that he does not agree with the protection of immunity and that he believes in equality before the law.
