“Window of Opportunity” for EU Membership Sees Kyiv - The Uncertain Factors

Ukraine sees a small “window of opportunity” to secure its future within the EU: between the Hungarian elections in April and the French presidential elections in April 2027, officials in Brussels and Kyiv report. Kyiv wants a reference to EU membership in 2027 to be included in the peace agreement being negotiated by US President Donald Trump, and considers the period between the two critical European elections as the best time to join the bloc. The EU is considering a plan that could give Ukraine partial membership next year. This would give Ukraine observer status during European Council summits and in European Parliament committees, while completing the reforms required for full membership benefits. The success of the effort depends on the outcome of the elections in Hungary and the stance of the new government, as well as the possible pressure that Trump will exert.
