Why Water Flowing into the Sea Isn't 'Lost' - Explanations from Authorities

The Departments of Water and Fisheries clarify that the flow of freshwater into the sea is not a loss, but part of the natural hydrological and ecological cycle. The natural outflow of rivers is an integral part of a balanced system and contributes to the enrichment of coastal and underground aquifers, preventing salinization. They explain that dams are important water management tools, but complete water retention can alter the natural functioning of rivers and negatively affect biodiversity. Maintaining adequate natural flow is essential to ensure the good ecological status of waters, in accordance with the European Water Framework Directive. Cyprus has 110 dams, with a total capacity of approximately 335 million cubic meters, ranking first in Europe in terms of dam-to-population ratio. Existing dams cover most of the relief of the free areas, already retaining a large portion of rainwater.
