When We Plant Rights, Dreams Grow – Message from the Children's Rights Commissioner and the Youth Advisory Group

The Children's Rights Commissioner, Elena Pericleous, states that the protection and well-being of children in Cyprus is a priority. She stated this on the occasion of the two-day meeting and training of the Commissioner's Youth Advisory Group (YAG), which focused on the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The YAG is an important institution for children's participation, allowing the Commissioner to consult directly with children and adolescents and take their views into account. This year's group consists of 35 children aged 13-17 from all cities in Cyprus. The meeting focused on the four fundamental principles of the Convention: non-discrimination, the best interests of the child, the right to life, survival and development, and participation and freedom of opinion. The Commissioner emphasized that children are not merely recipients of policies, but also rights holders. Elena Pericleous, taking office as Commissioner in October 2025, has prioritized listening, mapping challenges, and promoting the rights of children in Cyprus.
