Voniatis on Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Mutation Could Lead to Human Transmission

Epidemiologist Michalis Voniatis analyzed the epidemiological aspects of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, emphasizing the importance of the situation in the occupied territories. He stressed that the Republic of Cyprus must apply strict EU rules to maintain access to the single market. He explained that the measures taken are not arbitrary, but are provided for by European directives. Although foot-and-mouth disease does not affect humans, measures are also taken for public health reasons, as there is a risk of mutation of the virus, especially if pigs are infected, with possible transmission to humans. Mr. Voniatis criticized the government's delay in responding and stressed the need for strict control at the checkpoints to prevent further spread of the disease.
