Von der Leyen to President of Cyprus: Together We Will Navigate Troubled Political Waters

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, at the new port of Limassol, to discuss the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU for 2026. Von der Leyen emphasized Cyprus's unique expertise in dialogue and diplomacy, as well as the importance of cooperation in troubled political waters. President Christodoulides presented Cyprus's priorities, such as migration, climate change, and security in the Eastern Mediterranean, and expressed Cyprus's readiness for full integration into the Schengen Zone. The creation of a Firefighting Hub in Cyprus, a priority for the EU, and the Action Plan for the Mediterranean were also discussed.
