Von der Leyen Highlights Trade Opportunities as EU-Mercosur Deal Faces Vote

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of trade for the European Union, stating that intra-EU trade accounts for 55% of the EU's GDP, while external trade represents 45%. She spoke about the opportunities presented by the EU-Mercosur agreements and the future agreement with India, stressing that they will create jobs and strengthen supply security. She also assured that safeguards have been put in place for sensitive agri-food sectors. The discussion took place before the European Parliament, against the backdrop of farmer protests against these agreements. A vote is expected today on whether the agreements will be referred to the EU Court of Justice for a constitutional review.
