Venezuela Calls on Trump to End 'Blockade and Sanctions'

The interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, has called on Donald Trump to lift the “blockade and sanctions” against her country, shortly before the two-month anniversary of the US operation in Caracas that led to the capture of Nicolás Maduro. Rodríguez, who took office in February, is seeking a shift in relations with the US, having already met with high-ranking American officials. She is calling for an end to the oil embargo imposed on Venezuela in 2019, while acknowledging that the US Treasury Department has granted some licenses for multinational activities in the country. However, Washington seeks to dictate Venezuela's decisions. Trump, during his “State of the Union” address, praised the relationship with Rodríguez and referred to the receipt of 80 million barrels of oil from Venezuela. Rodríguez responded, emphasizing the start of a new cooperation program. The Venezuelan government, under US pressure, is promoting reforms in the oil sector and an amnesty law, but the opposition and NGOs denounce that the release of political prisoners is happening at a slow pace.
