US Universities Advise Against Travel to Cyprus, Egypt, and Turkey

The University of Texas System has issued travel guidance aimed at enhancing the safety of personnel and students due to changing geopolitical and security conditions. The guidance provides for stricter evaluation and approval of international travel. The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is immediately adapting its procedures, requiring approval from both the International Oversight Committee (IOC) and the President of the institution for travel to countries such as Egypt, Turkey, and Cyprus. The administration recommends avoiding travel to these areas unless there is a substantial professional or research need. This decision follows previous travel restrictions for countries in the Middle East and Europe. Each exemption request will be considered based on the existence of a “substantial professional or research need.” Experts point out that the tightening of procedures reflects increased challenges in international air traffic and geopolitical tensions. University leadership urges staff and students to consult official travel advisories and exercise careful judgment.
