US Pledges $2 Billion in Humanitarian Aid to UN

The United States has pledged $2 billion in humanitarian aid to the United Nations, following significant cuts to foreign aid made in 2025 by the Trump administration. These cuts led to similar reductions from other Western donors, such as Germany, and an overall loss of funding for the UN. The US contribution to the UN's humanitarian needs decreased to approximately $3.38 billion in 2025, representing about 14.8% of the total amount. This is a dramatic drop from $14.1 billion in 2023 and a peak of $17.2 billion in 2022. The UN had already appealed for $23 billion for 2026 to reach 87 million people in need. The decline in donor support, despite growing global needs, poses significant challenges to the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance. The head of the UN's humanitarian aid, Tom Fletcher, stated that the UN's humanitarian response is overly stretched and underfunded, forcing the UN to make “tough choices” to prioritize those with the greatest need.
