US Congress Approves Bill Promoting Eastern Mediterranean's Role in IMEC Corridor – Impact on Cyprus and GSI

The “Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act,” aimed at strengthening US cooperation with Eastern Mediterranean countries and promoting the India-Middle East-Europe (IMEC) corridor, has passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The bill focuses on deepening energy and defense cooperation with India, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and Egypt, as well as connecting their infrastructure to the IMEC. Specific projects mentioned include the “Great Sea Interconnector,” the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnector (GREGY), the Greece-Bulgaria natural gas pipeline, and new LNG terminals. The bill calls on the US Secretary of State to prioritize the Eastern Mediterranean in US foreign policy, support existing cooperation frameworks (such as the 3+1), and strengthen the East Mediterranean Gas Forum. It also promotes regional convergence through enhanced diplomatic and economic ties, including the Abraham Accords. Due to the upcoming US midterm election year, it is expected that the bill will be advanced as an amendment to budget-related legislation. Cyprus is expected to be positively impacted by the implementation of IMEC and the strengthening of energy cooperation in the region. The Greece-Israel Strategic Alliance (GSI) is expected to be further strengthened as the bill promotes cooperation between Eastern Mediterranean countries. The submission of annual reports to Congress will monitor the implementation of the law and the progress of projects.
