Union of Municipalities Continues Consultations on Local Government Reform

The Union of Municipalities of Cyprus continues its provincial consultations in anticipation of discussions with the Ministry of Interior regarding the reform of Local Government. The aim is to record the real needs and shape modern, financially strong and effective local authorities for the benefit of citizens. The Union has already held meetings in Larnaca, Famagusta and Paphos, while the latest provincial conference took place in Nicosia. During the consultations, the Union of Municipalities formulated specific proposals and positions, as well as processed counter-proposals on issues where the government's intentions are apparent. The President of the Union of Municipalities of Cyprus, Andreas Vyras, stressed that the success of the reform requires real administrative and financial autonomy of the Municipalities. Issues such as waste management, digital transition through the 'Evagoras' project and the sustainability of the Municipalities were discussed during the consultations. The meetings were attended by mayors, deputy mayors, municipal council members, representatives of the Provincial Self-Governing Authority, technocrats, MPs and representatives of political parties.
