UN to Withdraw Most Peacekeepers from Lebanon by Mid-2027

The UN announced it will withdraw most of its peacekeeping troops from Lebanon by mid-2027, marking a significant change in the international organization's presence in the region. This decision comes after years of peacekeeping presence between Israel and Lebanon, starting in 1978, and is the result of pressure from Israel and the US. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will begin a gradual withdrawal from December 31, 2026, with the aim of completing the withdrawal of military personnel by mid-2027. After the withdrawal, UNIFIL will maintain limited missions, focused on protecting UN personnel and assets. Simultaneously, the UN is already reducing the number of peacekeepers due to financial problems. Lebanon is seeking the continuation of the international presence, while Italy has expressed its intention to maintain a military presence in the country.
