UN Chief Warns of Escalating Middle East Conflict, Appoints Special Envoy

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the escalating conflict in the Middle East, describing the situation as out of control and expressing fears of a wider war and humanitarian disaster. He appointed Jean Arnault as his personal envoy to manage the conflict and promote dialogue. He appealed for an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomacy, calling on the United States and Israel to end the war and Tehran to stop attacks on neighboring countries. He expressed concern about maritime transport and the security of Lebanon, warning against repeating the situation in Gaza. Mr. Arnault has extensive experience in international diplomacy and peace settlements.
