UK's Stormer Systems Arrive in Cyprus: Capabilities of Advanced Air Defense

Cyprus is strengthening its defense capabilities with the arrival of British Stormer High Velocity Missile (HVM) air defense systems. Stormer HVMs are land-based air defense systems designed for fast and effective protection against aerial threats, such as drones, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft. They are based on the Alvis Stormer armored vehicle and feature high mobility and speed. The system's main weapon is the Starstreak missiles, which are among the fastest short-range missiles globally, with speeds exceeding Mach 3.5. The missiles have three 'darts' with an explosive warhead, capable of penetrating armor and countering countermeasures. The firing range reaches 7 kilometers, and the maximum altitude is 1,000 meters. The missiles are guided by a semi-automatic laser beam-riding (SACLOS) system, with a fast response time. The system also includes the Air Defence Alerting Device (ADAD) with infrared scanning, which detects aircraft and helicopters at long distances. The British Ministry of Defence considers the Stormer HVM optimized for dealing with 'pop-up' threats. The addition of the Stormers strengthens the British presence in the region, combining ground and air patrols with Typhoon and F-35 aircraft. This system is an important tool for countering modern threats and protecting Cyprus.
