Two New Saints: Hieromonk Tychon and Hadji-George – Lived in the Kapsala Skete, the First was a Spiritual Guide to Paisios

The Ecumenical Patriarchate has decided to recognize two holy figures from Mount Athos as saints: Hieromonk Tychon and Monk George, known as Hadji-George. Hieromonk Tychon, of Russian origin, practiced asceticism in the Kapsala Skete and was a spiritual father to Saint Paisios, who held him in high esteem. He lived with strictness and devotion to prayer, and his memory is preserved through oral testimonies. Saint Paisios served near him and lived in his cell after his repose. Hadji-George, originally from Cappadocia, was also an important figure in the Athonite monasticism and passed away in Constantinople. The epithet “Hadji-” comes from his pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. Their recognition as saints was unanimous by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This decision highlights the importance of the Athonite tradition and the contribution of these two monks to the spiritual life of the Church. Tychon, in particular, is considered an important spiritual guide, while Hadji-George is an emblematic figure of monasticism. Their recognition as saints will strengthen the faith and piety of believers. The announcement of the Ecumenical Patriarchate emphasizes the importance of holiness and the need to honor the pious people who have devoted themselves to the service of God and their neighbor. The inclusion of the two monks in the calendar of saints is a significant moment for the Church and the Athonite community.
