Trump's Greenland Deal: A Cyprus-UK Model

Donald Trump has revealed a “framework for a future agreement” regarding Greenland, which includes the development of the “Golden Dome” anti-missile shield and mineral extraction. The agreement, which will also involve European allies, will allow the United States to control parts of Greenland as sovereign military zones, essentially creating American territory in the Arctic. According to “The Telegraph”, this plan mirrors the agreement between the UK and Cyprus, where Britain maintains sovereignty over two military bases. This will reassure Denmark, which has sovereignty over Greenland, that the US is not seeking full annexation of the island. Based on this model, the US will be able to deploy and operate military infrastructure, conduct intelligence and training operations, and have “freedom of movement” in air, land, and sea within designated defense areas. Furthermore, the agreement will facilitate access to mineral-rich areas without the need for permits. Trump described the deal as “excellent” and stated it would be “forever,” having initially threatened to impose tariffs on Greenland but later withdrawing the threat.
