Top Chess Player Withdraws from Cyprus Tournament Citing Safety Concerns

A leading chess player, Koneru Hampi from India, has withdrawn from the 2026 Candidates Tournament to be held in Cyprus, citing safety concerns due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Her decision comes shortly before the tournament's start, which is scheduled to take place at the Cap St Georges Hotel in Paphos from March 28th to April 16th, with a prize fund of one million euros. Hampi's position will be filled by Anna Muzichuk from Ukraine. Hampi expressed her anxiety about her safety, stating that no event can supersede her personal security and well-being. Her decision has sparked discussions about the safety of athletes in international events, especially during periods of geopolitical instability. Meanwhile, German billionaire Vadim Rosenstein had proposed moving the tournament to Germany, offering to cover all expenses to ensure the safety of the players. However, the proposal was rejected by the International Chess Federation, which insists on holding the tournament in Cyprus. The CEO of the International Chess Federation, Emil Sutovsky, stated that the decision to hold the tournament in Cyprus remains unchanged, despite Hampi's withdrawal. The tournament is expected to attract the global elite of chess and provide a significant step towards the crowning of the World Champion.
