Time to Support the Open University

Concerns are being raised about the smooth operation of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), following the discussion of its budget in Parliament. The OUC plays an important role in higher education, providing access to knowledge for workers and adult students. Strengthening the institution is essential for a modern and inclusive education policy. The discussion about the funding of the OUC is not merely technocratic, but concerns the type of higher education we want: a balanced system with strong public institutions or a model where private education gains a dominant role. There is fear that the OUC may be downgraded in favor of private interests, due to the stagnation or limitation of its resources. The government and the Ministry of Education have a responsibility to strengthen the institution with investments in study programs, digital infrastructure and international collaborations. The OUC is an institution linked to lifelong learning and equal access to knowledge. Its strengthening is a duty of the state.
