‘They Poisoned Us’: Millions of Premature Deaths from Nuclear Tests

A new report by the Norwegian People’s Aid reveals the devastating and long-term consequences of nuclear tests worldwide, estimating that they have caused at least four million premature deaths from cancer and other diseases. The report states that more than 2,400 nuclear devices were detonated in tests in 15 countries from 1945 to 2017, with particularly severe impacts on communities living near the test sites. The effects are not limited to areas near the tests, as every person today carries radioactive isotopes in their body from atmospheric tests. The report denounces the culture of secrecy followed by the states that conducted the tests, concealing information about radioactive waste and providing limited or inadequate compensation to victims. No nuclear power has officially apologized for the tests, and the discussion gains new relevance after Donald Trump's statements about the possible resumption of US nuclear tests – something experts describe as “extremely dangerous”. The report calls on nuclear powers to take responsibility for their actions, strengthen medical care and compensation programs, disclose data, and proceed with the cleanup of contaminated areas. It emphasizes that the past continues to affect the present and that healing the trauma remains an open request for affected communities.
