The Fast of Lent: Benefits and Pitfalls
The fast of Lent, with the abstinence from animal products, can have health benefits, such as reducing “bad” cholesterol, better weight control, and improving mood, if applied correctly. However, care is needed to ensure adequate protein, calcium, and other nutrient intake. It is important to avoid overconsumption of lenten foods, as well as the misconception that all lenten foods are “dietary”. Alternative sources of protein are suggested, such as seafood, legumes combined with cereals, quinoa, tahini, and nuts, as well as sources of calcium such as spinach, broccoli, and tahini. The fast can be an opportunity for a healthier diet, but requires careful planning and balance.
