The Cost of 'Patriotism' in Governance

The article analyzes the institutional temptation faced by presidents to postpone difficult decisions in order to seek a second term. This practice, particularly detrimental in countries with significant national issues like Cyprus, leads to avoiding political costs and undermining the genuine resolution of problems. The case of Nikos Anastasiadis's governance and the stance at Kran Montana are cited as a characteristic example, where avoiding unfavorable decisions at the expense of resolving the Cyprus issue turned into communication management. Furthermore, the correlation of this practice with phenomena of collusion and self-serving exercise of power is highlighted.
