Tension over Vasilikos: No Details on Fees, Costs €1 Million a Day to Cypriots

Tensions arose at the Parliamentary Committee on Energy during a discussion about the delay in the natural gas project at Vasilikos. MPs requested details on the fees of technical and legal consultants, but the President of ETYFA refused to provide them, citing confidentiality and a previous leak of information to the media. The Minister of Energy, Michalis Damianou, stated that the government is trying to find a way to continue the project through new bidding procedures, but did not provide specific timelines. He attributed the delays to the time-consuming procedures of the public sector. Regarding the floating unit 'Prometheus', the Minister said it would be certified once it receives a full load, but noted that there is no pier in Cyprus to use. The discussion highlighted the lack of political accountability for the project's delay and the undervaluation of parliament. The DISY MP, Averof Neofytou, requested more details on the consultants' fees, while the President of ETYFA replied that a letter with some information had already been sent to the Parliament, which however appears to have been lost. The project at Vasilikos remains stalled, with the cost estimated at €1 million per day for Cypriots.
