Tempi Tragedy: From Remembrance to Exploitation

Three years after the Tempi tragedy, Greece remains divided, not only due to impunity and slow justice, but also due to the exploitation of the tragedy for personal and political gain. While most relatives of the victims showed dignity, some, such as Maria Karystianou, turned the tragedy into a platform for self-promotion and political ambition. Criticism is also directed at the political system, which attempted to exploit the tragedy to overthrow the government, spreading conspiracy theories and unreliable accusations. However, society seems to have the discernment to distinguish genuine grief from hypocrisy. The Tempi tragedy reveals how easily a national wound can become a tool for exploitation and the need for respect for the memory of the victims.
