Technology as a Tool to Curb Smuggling Across the Green Line

Smuggling through the green line remains a chronic problem for Cyprus, with security gaps being exploited by illegal activities. The illegal transfer of goods, such as animal feed, cigarettes, drugs, weapons, and animals, from and to the occupied territories is a common occurrence, driven by financial gain. Authorities are making efforts to tackle the problem, but the nature of the line of confrontation, with its large length, makes its full surveillance difficult. Cyprus's accession to the European Union in 2004 and the implementation of the Green Line Regulation have created a legal framework for managing flows, but have not eradicated smuggling. The discussion about closing the crossings as a solution is rejected, as it could have negative effects on the political efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue. Recent smuggling incidents, such as the transport of manure and tobacco products, have intensified the need for stricter security measures along the green line. Increased vigilance by the authorities is considered a vital necessity to limit the phenomenon. In an effort to strengthen surveillance, the Republic of Cyprus signed an agreement with Israel to install a monitoring system. This step is considered positive and is expected to contribute to more effective tackling of smuggling.
