Taxi Drivers in Larnaca Announce Strike Action

Taxi drivers in the Larnaca province are escalating their mobilization efforts, starting with a four-hour work stoppage next Tuesday, January 13th. The decision, announced by the Pan-Cypriot Federation of Urban Taxi Drivers (POAT), is due to the uncontrolled operation of passenger transport applications, particularly at Larnaca Airport, which threatens their professional survival. The taxi drivers are protesting the lack of enforcement of legislation and the unfair competition caused by the applications. They demand the immediate and complete disconnection of the signal and activity of applications at the airport, except for those licensed to operate in the Larnaca province, as well as the strict adherence to taxi base regulations by all applications. POAT warns that if the authorities do not take immediate and substantial action, a 24-hour strike will follow on Tuesday, January 20th, and, if no solutions are found, an indefinite strike will begin on January 28th. The taxi drivers state that they have exhausted all patience and that the responsibility for the consequences will lie with those who knew the situation and did not act. The POAT announcement emphasizes the need to enforce the law and restore legality in the taxi industry, in order to ensure the sustainability of professionals and the provision of quality services to citizens.
