Takis Hadjidemetriou: The Current Disappointing Situation Cannot Be Considered Permanent

Veteran politician Takis Hadjidemetriou, following the release of his new two-volume work, analyzes the history of Cyprus and the causes that led to the tragic division of the island. He believes that the "point zero" lies at the beginning of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, as the Zurich-London Agreements, while offering independence, contained existential risks that were not addressed with realism. Hadjidemetriou emphasizes that the failure to implement the Agreements and the intercommunal conflicts of 1963 led to a disastrous course that culminated in the 1974 coup and the Turkish invasion. He points out that the act of Greek Cypriot officers turning against the Republic of Cyprus gave Turkey the opportunity to invade and conquer 37% of the territory. The author stresses that the current situation, with division and ethnic separation, is unprecedented in the history of Cyprus, which for thousands of years has been an island where people and cultures coexisted. He criticizes the lack of understanding of the risks inherent in the Zurich-London Agreements and the failure to support the Republic of Cyprus. He expresses the view that the struggles and sacrifices of the people should have led to a better outcome, but the lack of realism and imagination led to disaster. He believes that a way could have been found to overcome the weaknesses of the Agreements and for the bi-communal state to survive, while emphasizing that in times of crisis leaders sought a return to the Agreements.
