Taiwan Rejects US Request to Relocate Chip Supply Chain

Taiwan has informed Washington that its proposal to relocate 40% of the semiconductor supply chain to the US is “impossible,” as the country believes its decades-long developed chip ecosystem cannot be easily transferred. Taipei insists that the industry's expansion, including investments in the US, must be based on continued development and investment in Taiwan. This decision contrasts with the goals of the Trump administration, which sought to boost semiconductor production in the US through $500 billion in investments and potential tariffs for companies not relocating production to America. Despite investments by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the US industry, analysts believe the US plans for “reshoring” production are infeasible due to the complexity of the supply chain. Taiwan, with its central role in global semiconductor production, is considered a significant factor in geopolitical balance.
