Strong Solar Storm Hits Earth – Disruptions to Satellites and Power Grids Possible

A strong solar storm has begun hitting Earth, potentially causing problems with power grids and satellites. The storm, which is rated a 4 on a five-level scale, is expected to continue today with reduced intensity. Although Earth experienced a level 5 storm in 2024, the current one is the strongest since 2003. The solar storm was caused by a powerful solar flare and is resulting in disturbances to Earth’s magnetic field. This can lead to phenomena such as the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) in areas where it is uncommon, degradation of high-frequency communications, overloading of power grids, and anomalies in satellite operations. The solar storm in October 2023 caused power outages in Sweden and damage to energy infrastructure in South Africa. Authorities warn that the current storm may cause the aurora borealis to be visible in areas of the US, even in southern states like Alabama. Solar activity is a factor associated with such phenomena, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate potential impacts.
