Strong Solar Storm Hits Earth

Published January 20, 2026, 05:21

A strong solar storm began hitting Earth on Monday and may cause problems with power grids and satellites. The storm is rated a 4 on a five-level scale and is the strongest since 2003. It may cause spectacular auroral displays in areas where the phenomenon is rare, even in southern US states like Alabama. A similar storm caused power grid issues in Sweden and South Africa in 2023.
