Stefanou: The Abolition of British Bases is a Matter of Overall Planning

AKEL states that the government is not raising the issue of abolishing the British bases in Cyprus, nor has a technical committee been proposed to discuss their status. Stefanos Stefanou stated that the government wants to discuss with Britain issues related to the regulation of citizens' daily lives and the operation of the bases, such as development. AKEL believes that the abolition of the bases is a deeply political issue, linked to the Cyprus issue and the role of Britain as a guarantor power. The party has submitted a document since 1990 with a detailed analysis of the issue, but emphasizes that the abolition of the bases requires a comprehensive plan and the selection of the appropriate time. The government, according to government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, is seeking a structured and controlled discussion with Britain, which will not be public, with the aim of improving the operation of the bases.
