Stavros Malas Determined to Organize Livestock Sector with Model Units – What He Tells philenews About His Priorities

Stavros Malas has been appointed head of the Special Scientific Committee for the reconstruction and upgrading of the livestock sector in Cyprus. The committee will submit proposals within three months for a more resilient and modern livestock model, focusing on protecting livestock capital from purebred sheep and goat breeds, which will form the basis for replenishing animals that will be culled due to foot-and-mouth disease. Mr. Malas emphasized the importance of the geographical dispersion of livestock units and the need to create model units, while reiterating the need to protect purebred sheep and goat breeds. The committee will also consider measures to address the current crisis with foot-and-mouth disease. The Cypriot government announced a package of measures to support livestock farmers, including full compensation for those affected, strengthening their income, and supporting the purchase of animals. In addition, the costs for analyses, laboratory tests, and vaccines will be covered, and there will be special support for those affected by the grazing ban.
