State Funeral Held for Former President George Vassiliou

The former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, was laid to rest today with state honors and at public expense, at the age of 94. The funeral took place at the Church of Holy Wisdom, attended by President Christodoulides and representatives of the Greek government. Before the service, the coffin was transferred to the church with military escort and honors were paid. The Council of Ministers declared the day a public holiday, expressing national mourning for the loss of the distinguished politician. Representatives from the political, academic, and social life of Cyprus and Greece attended the funeral. Eulogies were delivered by President Christodoulides, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, Rector of the University of Cyprus Tassos Christofides, associates of the deceased, and his son, Euelthon Vassiliou. A short message was also read by an associate of the former Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci. Following the funeral service, George Vassiliou's coffin was transferred to the Aglantzia Municipal Cemetery for burial, with a military guard of honor firing salute volleys. The funeral marked the end of a long and significant political career, leaving a void in Cypriot society.
