State Funeral for Former President Vasiliou - Public Mourning Declared

The Cypriot Cabinet convened in an emergency session and decided to honor the former President of the Republic, George Vasiliou, with the honors of an active President. Public mourning has been declared from today until the day of the funeral, Saturday, January 17, 2026, which will also be a public holiday. Flags will be flown at half-mast on all public buildings and schools. A book of condolences will be opened at the Presidential Palace for members of the diplomatic corps and state officials, while similar books will be opened at Cypriot diplomatic missions. The Cabinet expressed its deep sorrow for the loss of George Vasiliou, recognizing his contribution to the economic development, social progress, and modernization of Cyprus, as well as his dedication to resolving the Cyprus issue.
