Special Court for Kosovo: Prosecutors Seek Conviction of Thaci

Prosecutors at the Special Court for Kosovo have sought the conviction of former President Hashim Thaci for war crimes and proposed a 45-year prison sentence. Thaci and three former commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) are accused of persecution, murder, torture, and enforced disappearances during the 1998-1999 uprising. Prosecutors argue that the defendants committed crimes to gain control of Kosovo, killing over 100 political opponents and abusing hundreds in detention camps run by the KLA. Thaci is considered to have been in control of KLA forces and is therefore responsible for their actions. The accused deny all charges, while the lawyers argue that Thaci had no real power over the KLA. The trial, which lasted almost three years, is in its final stages, with the lawyers' closing arguments expected soon. The court was established in 2015 to investigate alleged war crimes committed by former members of the KLA. The case has sparked reactions in Kosovo, with some considering the court biased and the KLA leaders heroes.
