Russia Supports 'Political' Settlement in Middle East Amid Trump Announcement

Russia has voiced its support for a 'political' settlement to the war in the Middle East, during a phone conversation with the Iranian Foreign Minister, while Donald Trump announced negotiations with Iran. Trump had previously threatened an attack on Iranian facilities, but now states that talks are 'very positive and constructive'. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a political settlement, expressing concern about the escalation of the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of the dangers of attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, such as Bushehr, for the safety of Russian personnel and the environment. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the situation should have been resolved long ago through political and diplomatic negotiations, warning against any attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Russia considers such an attack to be 'potentially extremely dangerous'. The crisis began after Trump threatened to 'annihilate' Iran's factories if it did not open the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz has been blocked by Iran, following US-Israeli airstrikes. The announcement of negotiations came after these threats.
