Russia Imposes Restrictions on Telegram Over Alleged Legal Violations

Russia has announced the imposition of gradual restrictions on the messaging platform Telegram, citing violations of Russian law. Russian authorities accuse Telegram of failing to take sufficient measures to prevent its use for terrorist purposes and profiteering. Roskomnadzor, the Russian telecommunications regulator, announced that it will continue to impose restrictions until compliance with Russian law is achieved. Russia has already largely blocked WhatsApp and banned phone calls via Telegram and WhatsApp. Authorities also accuse Ukrainian security services of using the apps to recruit Russians for sabotage for a fee. This move is part of a broader effort by Russia to restrict freedom of expression online. Recently, Vladimir Putin signed a law punishing the search for content deemed “terrorist” and banning the promotion of VPNs. Platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram have already been blocked or are only accessible via VPN in Russia. This situation highlights the increasing censorship and control of the internet in the country.
