Romania: Flights Grounded, Roads Closed Due to Heavy Snowfall

Heavy snowfall and blizzards are hitting Romania, causing serious problems with air traffic, transportation, and electricity supply. A red alert has been declared in the central, southern, and eastern parts of the country. Flights have been canceled, roads and schools have been closed, and over 166,000 households have been left without power. At Otopeni Airport in Bucharest, the roads are covered with 30 centimeters of snow and no planes have taken off. In Bucharest, public transport has been disrupted and trains have been delayed by more than six hours. Sections of highways and national roads have been closed in various counties. Authorities have intervened to remove trees and power poles that have fallen due to the weight of the snow, as well as stranded vehicles. At the same time, the installation of photovoltaic systems with a capacity of 5 megawatts has been completed, which is expected to produce 8.4 megawatt-hours of clean energy annually. The situation has been described as the most severe of the winter by the Romanian meteorological service. Authorities are urging citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
