“Ridiculous Argument”: President Responds to Link Between Cyprus Talks and Elections

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that he is ready to attend an expanded conference to resume negotiations, even next week, reiterating his readiness to meet to announce the resumption of talks from where they left off in Kran Montana. He stated that he is sending a message to all parties to prove their readiness in practice. Commenting on an article by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin, which stated that the leaders need time for ideas to mature, President Christodoulides rejected the linkage of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council and the parliamentary elections with the resumption of negotiations. The President described the connection of the parliamentary elections with the resumption of negotiations as a “ridiculous argument.” If some are not ready, he called on them to say so publicly. Additionally, he commented on the statements of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, regarding delays in the crossing of Agios Dometios, stating that the Republic of Cyprus is ready to facilitate the process.
