Reactions to Desalination Unit in Mazotos – Work Halt Demanded Due to Lack of Environmental Study

The Cyprus Federation of Environmental Organizations (CFOE) is demanding the immediate halt of work on the construction of the desalination unit in Mazotos, as it is proceeding without the necessary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and without public consultation. The CFOE expresses strong concern about the legality of the process and the protection of the environment, as the construction of the unit has significant environmental impacts, particularly on the marine area and the disposal of brine. The CFOE supports the residents and the Mazotos Community Council and demands full transparency and participation of the local community in decisions. It points out that addressing water scarcity is important, but must be done with respect for the environment and the institutional process.
