Rauona from EP: EU Needs Unity for Energy Security Amidst Geopolitical Crises

The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, representing the Council of the EU, emphasized the impact of developments in the Middle East and the need for EU unity during the discussion on energy security at the European Parliament. The discussion concerned the potential implications of the situation in Iran and the Gulf region, including the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz, on energy security, energy prices and EU competitiveness. Ms. Raouna stated that European leaders discussed the issue at the Spring European Council and that the discussion will continue with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. She stressed that the war in Europe inevitably affects the EU, with a significant increase in oil and natural gas prices. Although there is no immediate threat to the EU's energy supply, the situation remains unstable and requires preparation for potential further deterioration. Ms. Raouna emphasized the need for unity, as demonstrated during the energy crisis of 2022, in order to limit the risks to citizens, security and competitiveness. The EU is considering targeted, temporary and economically viable measures to reduce pressure on households and industry, taking into account that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions for all Member States. In addition, the need to adhere to the goals of electrification and decarbonization of the energy sector was emphasized to strengthen the EU's energy independence and protect against future crises.
