Raouna from EP: EU Needs Unity for Energy Security Amidst Geopolitical Crises

Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, emphasized the need for EU unity to ensure energy security, given developments in the Middle East and their potential impact on energy prices. Speaking at the European Parliament, she stated that European leaders discussed the impact of the situation in Iran and the Gulf region, as well as the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz, on the EU's competitiveness. Ms. Raouna stressed that the energy crisis of 2022 demonstrated the need for unity and coordination, and that the EU must demonstrate the same determination to mitigate risks to citizens and the economy. The Commission and member states are considering targeted measures to reduce pressure on households and industry. She noted that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions for all member states, as each country has a different energy mix, but coordination and solidarity remain crucial. She highlighted the importance of implementing the measures proposed by the Commission in the Action Plan for Affordable Energy. In the long term, the Deputy Minister emphasized the need to adhere to the goals of electrifying and decarbonizing the energy sector, as these are a key guarantee for strengthening the EU's energy independence and protecting against future crises. She also referred to the emissions trading system and the market correction mechanism for electricity.
