Prison Improvements 'On the Cards' in Cyprus - Completion in 3-6 Months

The Ministry of Justice and Public Order has announced the promotion of improvement works in existing prisons, which are expected to be completed within 3 to 6 months. These projects aim to improve the smooth operation, security, and living conditions of prisoners, pending the construction of new prisons. The planned works include the renovation of medical facilities, the creation of a new entrance for staff, the construction of a clothing warehouse, the creation of a new medical facility in the Open Prisons, the construction of a laundry room for prisoners, and the installation of a mobile phone jamming system. In parallel, the procurement and utilization of an electronic monitoring system have been initiated, with the aim of expanding the possibilities of conditional release, while ensuring public safety. The plan to expand the existing prisons has been cancelled, as a suitable site has been found for the construction of new ones. The Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, pledged close cooperation with the relevant services to ensure the timely completion of the projects and the achievement of substantial results.
