Prison Guards Union Welcomes Decision for New Prison

The Prison Officers Branch of the Pancyprian Confederation of Employees (ISOTITA) welcomes the decision of the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, to build a new prison, describing it as an adoption of the union's long-standing position. ISOTITA emphasizes that the need for a modern prison is existential, both for prison officers and inmates. The union accuses PASYDY of inaction in the past, arguing that its stance provided a “perfect alibi” for the state to avoid constructing the new facility. It points out that Minister Fytiris, recognizing the deadlock, proceeded with the only viable solution. ISOTITA considers the Minister's decision a victory for responsibility and logic, and a defeat for “misleading” compromise proposals. It reiterates the need for a modern and secure prison, capable of meeting contemporary challenges and ensuring the dignity of both inmates and prison officers.
