Prison Documents Case: Court to Review Withheld Documents Amidst Defense Objections

The Nicosia Criminal Court has decided to review documents that were not handed over to the defense in the case of the Central Prisons documents, in order to determine whether they are classified or confidential. The decision was made following strong reactions from the defense lawyers, who accused the Prosecution Authority of violating the fair trial. The defendants in the case include the former Director and Deputy Director of the Central Prisons, five members of the correctional institution, and a former employee. They face charges of conspiracy, theft of state property (48,432 documents, 370 architectural plans, 431 digital items) and abuse of power. The lawyer for Anna Aristotelous, Christos Triantafyllidis, argued that the Prosecution Authority is refusing to comply with its obligations under the Penal Code, citing national security reasons. The defense disagrees with the application of the exceptions and argues that none of the documents fall within them. The court will examine the documents to determine whether the Prosecution Authority was justified in refusing access to them. The defense believes that access to the documents is essential for a fair trial and that the Prosecution Authority bears the burden of proof as to the correctness of its claims.
